Joliet, IL: After building a 20-plus year resume of successfully leading collegiate, club and professional volleyball teams,ÌýTom WelshÌýwill look to bring those same winningÌýtraitsÌýtoÌýtheÌýUniversity of St. ÌÇÐÄAPPÌýas he takes over both theÌýFighting Saints women’sÌýteamÌýandÌýtheÌýnewly-createdÌýmen’sÌýprogram.ÌýÌýHe becomesÌýtheÌýfifthÌýhead coach in the 45-year history of theÌýwomen’sÌýprogram – replacing the retiringÌýCara CurrierÌý– andÌýtheÌýinauguralÌýmen’sÌývolleyballÌýcoach inÌýthe 54-year history of the department.
“We are more than happy to have Tom take over the reins of the women’s program, while also building the men’s program,â€Ìýsaid USF director of athletics Dave Laketa. “HeÌýhas had a lot of experience coaching both gendersÌýand we are optimistic that he will bring theÌýsame level ofÌýsuccess that he has had with each of his previous programs.”
St. ÌÇÐÄAPPÌýpublicizedÌýthe addition of men’s volleyball as a varsity sport onÌýJanuaryÌý22, with plans to play a full varsityÌýstartingÌýstartingÌýin January of 2027.
A national search was conductedÌýimmediatelyÌýfollowing that announcement with Welsh coming out as the top candidate.ÌýThe veteran mentorÌýgot his start in coaching with the Naperville Volleyball Club before expanding his wings at the collegiate level in 2019 when he became the headÌýwomen’sÌývolleyball coach for Morton College, based inÌýCicero,ÌýIll.ÌýÌýHe served in that capacity for twoÌýseasonsÌýbefore moving up the ranks to the professional level as an assistantÌýmen’sÌýcoachÌýforÌýthe 630ÌýSlunkersÌýProfessional Club.ÌýÌýDuringÌýhis time with theÌýSlunkers, WelshÌýconcurrentlyÌýserved as the 630Ìýand Serve CityÌý°Â´Ç³¾±ð²Ô’s Volleyball Club Directors until 2023 when he accepted the position as headÌýwomen’sÌývolleyballÌýcoach at Joliet Junior College.
In 2025, WelshÌýwas named theÌýhead coach at Trinity Christian College, where heÌýled both the men’sÌýand women’s volleyball programs.ÌýÌýIn his one season atÌýTCC,ÌýheÌýcompiled an overall record of 14-16 (12-6)Ìýon the women’s sideÌýand guided theÌýTrollsÌýtoÌýtheirÌýbest recordÌýin five years and aÌýfourth-place finish inÌýtheÌýChicagoland Collegiate AthleticÌýConferenceÌý(CCAC)ÌýstandingsÌýdespiteÌýtaking over just prior to the start of the season and without the aid of anyÌýrecruited athletes.ÌýÌýFor that accomplishment, heÌýwasÌýnamed the 2025 National Christian College Athletic AssociationÌý(NCCAA)ÌýNorth Central Region Coach of the Year.
One year ago,ÌýWelshÌýalso added the assignment ofÌýtechnical instructor of Gold Medal Squared (GMS) coaching systemsÌýto his portfolio.ÌýÌýIn that role, heÌýconducted on-court training sessions and clinics for athletes and coaches,Ìýwhile promoting best practices in skill execution, training design, feedbackÌýdeliveryÌýand statistical analysis.ÌýÌýÌýHe also provided mentorship and education to coaches nationwide through GMS clinics,ÌýcampsÌýand workshops,Ìýwhere he fostered professional growth and standardization of modern coaching principles.
“Having a good understanding ofÌýrunning two programs at the collegiate level at the same time and balancing that aspect of the job was one of the key things that we liked about Tom,” added Laketa. “Our search committee felt that withÌýthoseÌýcharacteristics, along with the passion, commitment and leadership ability that he brings to his programs, that made him a strong choice to become the next head coach of ourÌýtwoÌýprograms.”
