The Academic Resource Center (ARC) offers a variety of opportunities and support services for students to reach their potential and achieve their goals. Programs and services are available to enhance learning, improve skills, and promote success in courses. In the center, students will find computers, study aids, study tables, comfortable spots for reading, and friendly people to offer personalized help. Support for USF distance education students is happily provided by telephone and e-mail, and some tutoring is provided on a number of electronic platforms. All services are provided free of charge.
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a program that offers regularly scheduled reviews, discussions, study strategies, and exam preparation for historically difficult courses. Each session is guided by an SI leader, a student who has been successful in the course, knows what the professor expects, and can help you succeed!

Amanda Poston, Assistant Director of the ARC, is a USF alumna, having received her M.S. Reading Specialist degree from the university. She has been an adjunct professor in USF’s College of Education since 2019 and was an elementary school teacher for 15 years. Amanda loves to travel and is working on adding to her list of the 12 countries she has visited. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, three daughters and five pets!
Tutoring is completely free. You can come as many times as you鈥檇 like during the semester for as many different subjects as you鈥檇 like.
Some subjects are by appointment, and some are walk-in. To get tutoring for a walk-in subject, like writing, math, and science, you look at the schedules () and just 鈥渨alk in鈥� when you are free.听 Keep in mind that for walk-ins, it is a first-come, first served approach so manage your time effectively.听 Science and math can tutor multiple students at once, so don鈥檛 assume that they are too busy for you if you see someone already working.听 Always ask.听 To make an appointment with any of our other tutors, use Tutor Matching Service.听 Complete instructions are available in When you set the appointment, make sure to include:
听The tutor will greet you and ask you what you want to work on for the session and together you鈥檒l set some goals, create a short agenda and get to work. Tutoring is a collaborative service, so you should expect to really participate.听 You might even talk more than the tutor鈥攖hat鈥檚 a good thing! You might look at books, search things online, or go over your notes.听 What you do in a session will be determined by you and the tutor.听 If you want something explained differently or with different material, just ask. At the end of the tutoring session, you鈥檒l be asked your 800 number so we can record the session. At the end of the week, you鈥檒l get an email asking you to complete an evaluation.听 This helps us assess how we鈥檙e doing.
The ARC uses login information in order to evaluate how well we are meeting student support needs on campus. All you have to do is provide your 800 number and the course you want help with to the tutor.听 If you aren鈥檛 sure about that information, you can find it all in your portal.

Bring your notes, your textbook, your login information for any online reading/notes, and some questions you have for the tutor. The more organized you are before you come to the session, the more productive it can be.听 Because every student is different, the tutor cannot know what you might need help with if you say something as broad as 鈥淐hapter 2鈥�.听 Instead, mark things that you want to make sure you understand correctly, or things you don鈥檛 understand at all.
Tutoring is for all students. We have students visit the center who want to make sure they get the A, students who want to move up a grade, students who need to move up听 a few grades, students who don鈥檛 understand a small portion, and students who are rusty on some things since it has been a while since they understood.听 No matter who you are, you can benefit from tutoring.听 In fact, many of our tutors use each other for their other courses!
A list of our current tutors and their information can be found on the , but there are some truths about our tutors, regardless of who they are. All of our tutors are current students here at USF, and they鈥檝e all been recommended by faculty for that subject area. Each tutor goes through training as outlined by the College Reading and Learning Association and have to participate in 10 hours of training each year.
Because they are peer tutors, it鈥檚 possible that your question is complicated enough that a professor should be the one to answer it. Don鈥檛 get discouraged!听 The tutor will always try to help you understand the material, but they also don鈥檛 want to give misinformation.
The tutors cannot be expected to carry around all the books and notes for all the classes they鈥檝e taken and can tutor鈥攖hat would be one big backpack! Sometimes, too, information changes, and it鈥檚 important that you and the tutor have what is being currently covered by your professor as a resource. While tutors know the content well enough to help with material, they are not experts like your professors and sometimes need to verify that they are remembering things correctly.

Las tutor铆as son totalmente gratuitas. Puede venir tantas veces como quiera durante el semestre para tantas asignaturas diferentes como desee.
Algunos temas se tratan con cita previa y otros sin cita previa. Para obtener clases particulares de una asignatura sin cita previa, como escritura, matem谩ticas y ciencias, se consultan los horarios () y simplemente “se entra” cuando se est谩 libre.听 Tenga en cuenta que se atiende por orden de llegada, as铆 que gestione bien su tiempo.听 Los profesores de ciencias y matem谩ticas pueden dar clases a varios alumnos a la vez, as铆 que no d茅 por sentado que est谩n demasiado ocupados para usted si ve a alguien que ya est谩 trabajando.听 Pregunte siempre.听 Para concertar una cita con cualquiera de nuestros otros tutores, utilice Tutor Matching Service.听 Encontrar谩 instrucciones completas en听听Cuando concierte la cita, aseg煤rese de incluir:

El ARC utiliza la informaci贸n de acceso para evaluar en qu茅 medida satisfacemos las necesidades de apoyo de los alumnos en el campus. Traiga sus apuntes, su libro de texto, su informaci贸n de acceso para cualquier lectura/apuntes en l铆nea y algunas preguntas que tenga para el tutor. Cuanto m谩s organizado est茅 antes de acudir a la sesi贸n, m谩s productiva podr谩 ser.听 Como cada alumno es diferente, el tutor no puede saber en qu茅 puede necesitar ayuda si usted dice algo tan amplio como “Cap铆tulo 2鈥�.听 En su lugar, marque las cosas que quiera asegurarse de entender correctamente, o las cosas que no entiende en absoluto.
Las tutor铆as son para todos los alumnos. Tenemos alumnos que visitan el centro que quieren asegurarse de obtener la A, alumnos que quieren subir una nota, alumnos que necesitan subir algunas notas, alumnos que no entienden una peque帽a parte y alumnos que han olvidado algunas cosas, pues ya ha pasado un tiempo desde que las entendieron.听 No importa qui茅n sea, puede beneficiarse de las clases particulares.听 隆De hecho, muchos de nuestros tutores se utilizan mutuamente para sus otros cursos!
Puede encontrar una lista de nuestros actuales tutores y su informaci贸n en el听, pero hay algunas verdades sobre nuestros tutores, independientemente de qui茅nes sean. Todos nuestros tutores son alumnos de la USF y han sido recomendados por los profesores de esa asignatura. Todos los tutores reciben la formaci贸n indicada por la College Reading and Learning Association y tienen que participar en 10 horas de formaci贸n al a帽o.
